Southern Alberta Artist Karen Spurrell
Fine Art Landscape Paintings In Soft Pastel, Oil Pastel & Watercolour

THE PAINTED LANDSCAPE OF EARTH AIR AND WATER - FINE ART BY KAREN SPURRELL IN PASTELS
“How many ways can I paint the Alberta landscape? I ask myself that often and my answer is always the same, it’s limitless!
"I never tire of painting the rolling expansive Alberta foothills or prairie and the immense emotional skies above them. Finding that sparkling waterway or shadowy pond throwing out their ghostly reflections is a joy to paint. Gazing out over the towering distant mountains and conveying their mystic pull, this is why I paint".
"My pastel paintings fall between the natural shapes we recognize and abstraction, I lean towards a tonal or impressionistic technique as often my subjects require a mood or atmosphere to be expressed. The two main mediums I work with are soft pastels and oil pastels, which are great for their portability and immediate results. Many times my watercolour paintings are worked in with my pastels for mixed media effects".
Karen Spurrell is a Canadian pastel artist residing in Southwestern Alberta. About Karen
Karen Spurrell is a Southern Alberta pastel artist who predominantly started out as a watercolorist. Her art work over the years has transitioned into using mainly pastels. “My influences in art are the alchemists of light in their paintings such as Helen McNicoll, JM Turner, AJ Wainwright or Loriann Signori just to name a few. There are so many artists I am learning from and whom I admire”. Karen draws her inspiration from the backroads in Alberta, the mountains, streams and skies, communicating on paper the beauty and wonder of living in the foothills of the South Canadian Rockies.
